  • On its closing day, the ISGA 2022 Awards will be presented and the next venue of the international event will be announced.

The Industry Day will be the closing journey of the XIV International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture (ISGA 2022), which will take place in the city of Puerto Varas, Chile, between November 27 and December 2. Its protagonists will be renowned researchers and professionals from the most important genetic houses, research centers, universities and production companies from all over the world.

At the end of the Industry Day sessions, which will be held on December 2, the closing ceremony of ISGA 2022 will take place, in which the Local Organizing Committee, led by José Manuel Yáñez, Dean of the Faculty of Veterinary and Livestock Sciences of the University of Chile, will announce the venue for the fifteenth version of the International Symposium on Genetics in Aquaculture.

In addition, on that date the ISGA 2022 Awards will be presented, which will distinguish the researchers who presented the best papers in the lecture, poster and elevator pitch sessions. “The members of the Scientific Committee will be in charge of evaluating and selecting the best abstract, the best poster and the best pitch presentation of the symposium, based on a series of previously established criteria,” explained Yáñez.

“Although we will only award one researcher per category, we must emphasize that they are all renowned specialists, with a wide trajectory and recognition in the world of genetics for animal and fish production, so we are sure that all the presentations will be a great contribution for those who participate in the meeting,” concluded the academic.

Contribution of genetics to global aquaculture production

During the Industry Day, specifically the last day of the Symposium, various aspects of the application and contribution of genetics in world aquaculture production will be reviewed, with special emphasis on salmon farming.

As for its program, it will begin with a keynote lecture by Roberto Neira, an outstanding local geneticist, academic of the Faculty of Agronomic Sciences of the University of Chile, with recognized experience in the genetic improvement of salmon and trout, and in the search for genetic markers associated with disease resistance.

After its inauguration, the Industry Day will continue with three sessions of national and foreign exhibitors, in which the main advances of their research and projects in the area will be presented. Among the topics to be discussed are the contribution of balanced genetic selection in the sustainability, growth and productivity of salmon farming; and alternative methods for the genetic prediction of feed efficiency in Atlantic salmon.

The genomic determinants of Salmo salar resistance to Caligus rogercresseyi; validation of selection for improved growth and fillet pigmentation in Atlantic salmon fed conventional and innovative diets; region-specific breeding objectives for Salmo salar in Chile will also be reported; a multi-trait selection approach in salar to ameliorate problems in the Chilean industry; genetic improvement of aquaculture species in the era of gene editing; and how selection for growth has reduced cost and increased sustainability in salmon farming and will continue to do so in the future.

Those interested in participating exclusively in the Industry Day can register directly on the ISGA website and attend only that day -either in person or online- at a lower cost than the general registration fee.

Farewell

As a farewell to the Symposium, as well as to the Industry Day, ISGA 2022 will offer a tasting of Chilean salmon and wine, where attendees will be able to enjoy different recipes, flavors and textures. “A unique experience where these important national export products will be showcased”, the organization assures.

ISGA 2022 is organized by the University of Chile and the Salmon Technology Institute (InteSal) of SalmonChile, with the collaboration of the universities Austral de Chile, Los Lagos and Andrés Bello. The event is sponsored by Benchmark Genetics, Hendrix Genetics, AquaGen, The Center for Aquaculture Technologies, ARQUIMED Innovación Illumina, IMV Technologies, Biosearch Technologies Genomics Analysis By LGC, ThermoFisher Scientific, MSD Salud Animal and Xelect.
