  • The Norwegian company presented PL+, a groundbreaking technology platform utilizing the potential of phospholipids from krill oil

Some days ago, the Lysaker (Norway) based company Aker BioMarine was in Shanghai at China International Import Expo (CIIE), that was held from last November 5 to 10, exhibiting its Antarctic krill-based products for human health & nutrition, aqua, and pets. This was Aker BioMarine’s fourth consecutive year participating in the Chinese event, and this time, the company conducted 18 signing ceremonies to mark new strategic partnership agreements with Chinese customers.

During the Expo, Aker BioMarine hosted an official Norwegian delegation representing the Norwegian Consulate General in China at the company’s CIIE exhibit. The Norwegian delegation witnessed the signing with a total of 18 strategic partners from the human health & nutrition and pet food industries.

“China is the world’s second largest importer and consumer in the world, and it is a key strategic market for Aker BioMarine. We have solidified many long-term partnerships in the country,” said Thong Luu, SVP Human Health & Nutrition Asia of Aker BioMarine. For him, the Expo was a great opportunity for the company to officially declare their “collaborations and progress” in the Chinese market.

An effective ingredient

At the Aker BioMarine stand, company representatives talked to attendees about how krill is a superior source of omega-3 and choline for the human nutrition supplement market. Krill is also proven to be an effective ingredient for pet food, yielding clear health returns for domesticated animals as well.

During the event, Aker BioMarine offered product samples from its stand, as well as run live streaming and sales offers.

“CIIE is attended by hundreds of industry leaders and large organizations from around the world – and it’s a key event for us to promote our products to current and potential customers, officials, and consumers. We are excited to take part and share the benefits of krill, as well as celebrate and solidify our many partnerships in China,” said Regional Sales Director, HH&N China, Jim Wang.

Support economic globalization

CIIE officially launched in 2018, an initiative from Chinese President Xi Jinping to support economic globalization in the country. The Expo is hosted by the Ministry of Commerce of the People’s Republic of China and the Shanghai Municipal People’s Government and took place at the National Convention and Exhibition Center in Shanghai.

There was Aker BioMarine, a biotech innovator and Antarctic krill-harvesting company, dedicated “to improving human and planetary health”, as they say. Listed on Oslo Stock Exchange, the company develops krill-based ingredients for pharmaceutical, nutraceutical (Superba Krill), aquaculture (QRILL Aqua), and animal feed applications (QRILL Pet), including INVI, a highly concentrated protein isolate, and LYSOVETA, a targeted transporter of EPA and DHA from krill.

The Aker BioMarine members claims their value chain is fully transparent and stretches from sustainable krill harvesting in pristine Antarctic waters through its Montevideo logistics hub, Houston production plant, and to customers around the world.

It’s good to highlight that the company’s strong focus on sustainability inspired the launch of AION by Aker BioMarine, a circularity company dedicated to helping companies to recycle and reuse waste.

The potential of phospholipids from krill oil

A few days after the CIIE, Aker BioMarine presented PL+, a groundbreaking technology platform utilizing the potential of phospholipids from krill oil (PL’s) as a unique delivery platform to bring new innovation to the nutraceuticals industry. Since phospholipids are both water and fat soluble, they act as an emulsifier and can create micelles for a maximum surface area for improved absorption for low-solubility and low-permeable substances.

By combining PL’s with other ingredients that have lower bioavailability and absorption rates into the body (such as Curcumin, CoQ10, CBD, Lutein and certain Omega sources), we can boost and enhance the uptake of these ingredients up to 25 times, bringing new cost-effective supplements to market.

“We believe PL+ is a real industry gamechanger for the nutraceuticals industry,” said Matts Johansen, CEO of Aker BioMarine. “Since our debut into the supplements industry over 15 years ago, we knew we had a special ingredient with krill due to its phospholipid advantage, and for years we have investigated the true potential of PL’s and are excited to bring this new technology platform to life.”
