Aquaculture Magazine reports:
The Norwegian company Mowi is celebrating 60 years of life. Since 1964, Mowi has been at the forefront of the future of food, tirelessly exploring ways to safeguard meals, livelihoods, the environment, and the world’s oceans for generations to come. According to them, their commitment to sustainable food production and environmental conservation “remains unwavering, a testament to our enduring vision.”
“From our humble beginnings, when a few pioneers began raising fish in their backyards, to our current Mowi 4.0 Smart Technology pens, Mowi’s values and vision have never wavered from those early days. Today, we are proud to be a world leader in the industry”, they said in this special occasion.
At the moment, Mowi employs 11,600 people across 26 countries that, according to them, all share the same vision, “to lead a Blue Revolution and provide a growing world population with healthy, sustainable, and delicious food. Our devoted and passionate employees are the heart of Mowi, and it is because of their hard work and dedication that we are able to serve 8 million meals per day.”
Proud of their history
In 1964, three men started raising fish outside of Bergen, at the West Coast of Norway. This marked the beginning of Mowi’s adventure and of that they call “a never-ending quest to make better use of the world’s oceans in order to feed a growing global population.”
Their salmon’s heritage begins with the original strong broodstock from the Vosso and Aroy rivers. While Mowi began in the early 1960s, the first eggs hatched during the winter of 1967. The first countries to request their fish were the United States, Japan, and France, and from there, they say, their notion of harnessing the power of the ocean spread quickly around the world.
“Mowi’s values and vision have never changed since our humble beginnings. We are proud to maintain complete internal control over our value chain, from farm to fork. Today, we are the world’s largest salmon producer and have been rated the world’s most sustainable animal protein producer. Our persistent dedication to sustainable food production and environmental conservation remains unwavering and is a testament to our enduring vision,” they said at their 60 anniversary.
Innovation has always been their cornerstone. “We are happy to be at the forefront of technological advances in the aquaculture business. We are currently leading the way in sustainable salmon farming with our Mowi 4.0 Smart Technology. Today, Mowi 4.0 exemplifies those innovative intuitions by ensuring sustainable meals with care, passion, and an everlasting commitment to providing goodness for all,” they said.
Salmon Farming Industry Handbook
On the other hand, Mowi recently presented its “Salmon Farming Industry Handbook 2024,” which highlights that annual growth in Atlantic salmon supply fell to 3% from 2013 to 2023 and forecasts that it will fall further, to 2%, between 2023 to 2028. In addition, the world’s largest and most successful salmon farming company expects the global supply of farmed salmon to shrink as demand outstrips production.
In its Handbook 2024, Mowi draws attention to the fact that the supply of Atlantic salmon worldwide has increased by 527% since 1995, which equates to 7% annual growth over the past 30 years. However, the industry is approaching a level of production where biological limits may force that growth to near stagnation.
According to the report, the growth in the world supply of Atlantic salmon has coincided with the growth in demand, which has increased by 3% in all markets over the last 10 years. For them, this strong growth in demand is due to the fact that Atlantic salmon is perceived worldwide as “a healthy, resource-efficient and climate-friendly product.”
For the people of Mowi, the growth of the world’s middle class, the aging population, the global trend towards healthy living and the attention paid to the carbon footprint of individuals and companies have caused demand to grow by around 11% per year over the last ten years.
