Aquaculture Magazine reports:
Some days ago, international company BioMar announced the introduction of Calm, its latest offering to complement the SmartCare range of products in salmon feeds. Made from natural ingredients, Calm can be added to both grower diets and used in addition to other already well-established SmartCare products, explained from BioMar United Kingdom (UK).
“Calm is a great addition to the SmartCare range of products that we already have. Whilst the need to treat fish for sea lice to remain within the regulatory limits is a necessity, we also understand that these types of stress events can bring with them other challenges that can have a prolonged negative impact. The introduction of Calm can alleviate some of these production pains,” assured Torunn Forberg, SmartCare Product Marketing Manager, BioMar.
Numerous stress events
With the increasing need of mechanical and other forms of treatment to help with the challenge of sea lice, salmon are subjected to numerous stress events such as crowding and general handling. This has a knock-on effect to the fish due to lost feeding days, reduced growth potential, and the increased risk of secondary infections potentially resulting in a lower final harvest weight and reduced quality.
Recommended to be used strategically before and immediately after any planned stress event, SmartCare Calm can be a useful addition to the feed for the farmer to help mitigate these risks to welfare which will help them maintain the expected level of performance.
“SmartCare Calm has been developed with the current production methods in mind. Research has shown it to have a positive effect on feed intake, growth, and pigmentation leading to better results for the farmer at harvest.”
The new addition of BioMar to SmartCare supports fish going through stress events such as crowding, promoting a quicker return to normal feeding rations. Made with natural ingredients, trials have shown an increased feed intake when compared to other stressed fish that were not fed SmartCare. Securing higher feed intake post handling events results in higher weight gain. Optimal feed intake potentiates increased pigment deposition in the flesh.
New Managing Director for Vietnam
Some days before of the launching, the BioMar Viet Uc joint venture in Vietnam announced that now is headed by Managing Director Duong Anh Tu, who has an extensive commercial experience from the feed and food sector in Asia. Duong Anh Tu has replaced Franck Bodin, who was hired to launch the business in Vietnam and has been instrumental in establishing the BioMar Viet Uc feed brand in the local market.
“We have chosen Duong Anh Tu to lead the next phase of our growth of the shrimp feed business in Vietnam. He has a proven ability to lead the development of innovative solutions for the local markets, and we are sure he will be a strong asset for the organization as well as for the customers”, explains Francois Loubere, Vice President of BioMar Asia.
During his career, Duong Anh Tu has been dedicated to managing commercial development, especially within the Vietnamese animal nutrition industry. Also, the new Managing Director has vast experience from local and global companies, including Olam Global Agri and Cargill.
The international company BioMar has during the last years created a strong global market position within the shrimp feed segment, positioning innovative grower feed solutions as well as high-end hatchery feed among the market leading products. The new product portfolio has a strong potential to help Vietnamese farmers in the current situation of adverse market conditions, they assured.
