AquaManager, a leading aquaculture management software platform, announced today that its integrated production management and Business Intelligence (BI) solution has gone live at Yalelo Zambia and Yalelo Uganda, Africa’s top Tilapia producers. The system enables both companies to optimize their fish production while driving improvements in environmental sustainability. Both Yalelo Zambia and Yalelo Uganda operate grow-out facilities and hatcheries in their respective countries. They are owned and operated by FirstWave Group – Africa’s largest vertically-integrated aquaculture firm.

“We are pleased and honored to be working with a pioneering aquaculture group like FirstWave Group,” said Kostas Seferis, founder of aquaManager. “Their successful implementation of aquaManager is an essential step towards the digitalization of the African aquaculture sector.” Founded in 2011, Yalelo Zambia has shown a commitment to producing sustainable, high-quality protein for the African region. Yalelo Uganda launched full operations including production, distribution, and retail of fish in urban Uganda in 2020.
Working on a collaborative basis, aquaManager and both Yalelo teams undertook the task of unifying the software requirements of the Zambian and Ugandan production facilities. The work was successfully finished as planned, in August of 2020. The new system integrates the information systems of both geographies into a common cloud infrastructure.
Both companies can now monitor and manage over 100 cages in real-time with aquaManager. Seferis added, “We are proud to be the IT provider for such a project and work hand-in-hand with the people at Yalelo Zambia and Yalelo Uganda. The success of this go-live implementation was truly a joint effort.”
The demanding project included the migration of data from multiple legacy systems. The new integrated system is based on shared master data. “Successful aquaculture has a lot to do with effective management and analysis of data,” Seferis noted. “Fish production is challenging, with many variables that can affect the profitability of the hatching and growing processes. These include temperature and water conditions along with cost factors. We give aquaculture producers the data tools they need to be on top of their production in real time, from any location. ”The aquaManager solution is capable of managing thousands of cages and tanks without performance issues. Cloud-based, the system provides the operational and management reports necessary for efficient production control. It uses state of the art BI technologies to support a common method of costing and planning. aquaManager guarantees information security, integrity and validity while contributing to the aquaculture producer’s digital transformation. Users of aquaManager are able to monitor data points like fish number, biomass and use of fish feed. As a comprehensive aquaculture BI platform, aquaManager gives users the data-driven knowledge they need to understand what’s happening in their production processes, choose the best production strategies and select the best suppliers.
“With the current deployment of aquaManager, we are running core operational processes and managing 123 cages in two locations, with data accessible by all staff,” said Mr. Bryan McCoy, FirstWave Group co-CEO. “The platform allows us daily visibility into operational performance in both geographies, integrates into Power BI for our customization of reports to business needs, and enables us to plan production in a detailed way to support customer demand. Ensuring a steady and increasing supply of fish to meet regional tilapia demand is our first priority, and AquaManager has equipped us with a tool for improved service delivery of supply”.
The aquaManager team is putting people at the center of enterprise software. The company has a vision to bring advanced technology to every fish and shrimp producer, helping them respond to the global food challenge for higher food production at highest quality level using fewer resources. “Quality is not an act; it is a habit,” said Seferis. “Our mission is to relentlessly pursue learning and holistic development for ourselves and everyone around us to shape a great future together. We want to create value for our company, community, and the world.”
