The Global Salmon Initiative (GSI), the “leadership initiative” which represents around 50 percent of the global farmed salmon sector may have to do a recount as Mowi has walked away from the organisation.

There wasn’t any specific reason given apart from that “Mowi has decided that the time is right for them to take their own independent path,” said Blumar CEO Gerardo Balbontin.

“Mowi has contributed a great deal to GSI, and we are confident that they will continue on the course that GSI set for the industry towards greater sustainability and transparency,” he said. “At the same time, it is important that the GSI moves forward with ever more ambitious goals and that is what we are announcing today. We have identified the areas where we see the greatest need for industry action, and where we believe our model of working will drive the greatest progress.”

The world’s largest salmon farmer Mowi has also taken down any reference to the GSI on its site.

GSI member companies include Bakkafrost (who own The Scottish Salmon Company), Blumar, Cermaq, Compañía Pesquera Camanchaca, Empresas AquaChile, Grieg Seafood, Huon Aquaculture, Los Fiordos, Multiexport Foods, New Zealand King Salmon, Norway Royal Salmon, Scottish Sea Farms and Ventisqueros.
