At the core of the acquisition is FS’s BioCollector, a robust system that efficiently captures and gently transports feed waste and sludge from open and semi-closed cages
Pelagia, the leading producer of pelagic fish products for human consumption, has acquired all shares in Fjord Solutions (FS), taking an important step towards more complete sludge solutions for the aquaculture industry. The company’s employees, products and patents will now become an integral part of Pelagia. At the core of the acquisition is Fjord Solutions‘ BioCollector, a robust collection system that efficiently captures and gently transports feed waste and sludge from open and semi-closed cages.
Fjord Solutions strengthens Pelagia‘s focus on sustainable sludge solutions, which already combines Pelagia‘s expertise in logistics and processes with Blue Ocean‘s technology for dewatering, storage and value creation of sludge. Pelagia is also an important supplier of essential ingredients in all kinds of fish- and animal feed; protein concentrate, fishmeal and fish oil.
“Fjord Solutions is a valuable addition to our portfolio. It gives us the opportunity to combine sludge collection at sea with dewatering, intermediate storage and transport. We provide our customers with fewer interfaces, lower operating costs and better resource utilization,” said after the announcement Egil Magne Haugstad, CEO of Pelagia.
Equipment Supplier with Heart for Innovation
Fjord Solutions is an aquaculture equipment supplier with heart for innovation and customer needs in focus. They deliver some of the most technological and feasible solutions within aquaculture.
As modern fish farming industry is under huge changes both in terms of more strict environmental requirements and governmental expectations about rapid growth, their purpose is that their innovative and sustainable solutions will help maintain good environmental conditions for fish, more cost-effective operations and strong production growth.
“Becoming part of Pelagia is the right choice for us. It gives us the opportunity to further develop our innovative solutions, while strengthening our ability to deliver complete systems to the industry. We look forward to becoming part of the Pelagia team,” says Daria Lysova, CEO of Fjord Solutions.
Very Positive Response
According to the Pelagia members, the industry’s response has been very positive. For them, the acquisition of Blue Ocean Technology in 2024, and now Fjord Solutions, makes Pelagia a leading player in complete sludge solutions for sea-based aquaculture.
“By gathering our resources and expertise in a single unit, we are accelerating the development of new solutions and streamlining existing offerings. Our goal is to expand our market share by covering more links in the value chain, thereby delivering even more comprehensive and competitive solutions to the industry,” says Knut Antonsen, COO and Head of Sludge at Pelagia.
26 Factories in Europe
Pelagia, for its part, is one global market leader in high-quality pelagic fish products, strategically positioned to meet the evolving needs of their diverse customer base. They thrive in dynamic markets, supported by favorable macro trends, and are committed to sustainability with a focus on 100% fish utilization.
Their mission, they say, is to create future where quality, innovation, and responsibility converge to deliver exceptional value. “We transform raw materials into a wide range of products, including fish for human consumption, health supplements, fish oil, marine proteins, protein concentrates, and essential ingredients for various fish and animal feeds.
The company operates 26 factories in Norway, United Kingdom, Ireland, and Denmark. Twenty-three of the factories are 100% owned, while three are partly owned associates, and the operation is divided into two divisions: Food (consumption) and Feed (protein concentrate, fishmeal and fish oil).
The Food division exports close to 100% of its products, while Feed’s products are mainly sold in the domestic market as essential ingredients in fish- and animal feed production. “It is therefore right to say that close to 100% of the wild pelagic fish is utilized, and ends up at someone’s table, someday, either directly or indirectly,” they said.
