The partners behind a Pilbara edible oysters pilot project have won an aquaculture scholarship to travel interstate and learn from the best in the industry.
Murujuga Aboriginal Corporation and the Kimberley-based Maxima Pearling Company today received $30,000 government funding as a second round winners of the Premier’s Agriculture and Aquaculture Entrepreneurship Program.
MAC and Maxima are working to start up a research and development trial of farming rock oysters off the Dampier Archipelago, which is due to begin by the end of the year.
If successful the project could mark the beginning of a lucrative new aquaculture industry in the Pilbara and create local jobs.
Premier Mark McGowan congratulated the successful recipients of the aquaculture and agriculture funding.
“The 2017 recipients of the Premier’s Agriculture and Aquaculture Entrepreneurship Program reflect the depth and sophistication in these important industries for Western Australia,” he said.
“The scholarships will assist the recipients to further develop their ideas and innovations in their industry through travel, and then bring that knowledge home to WA.”
