By-product line arrives at Seafood Expo Global 2024

Aquaculture Magazine reports:

Tilapia producer Regal Springs celebrated its first participation at Seafood Expo Global in Barcelona, Spain, with the launch of its new by-product brand, Natural Additions. The new product range includes belly meat, fillet trimmings, carcasses and carcasses, fishmeal and fish oil, scales, skin, heads, mince and eyes. “Natural Additions’, is a part of our business that ensures we use each and every part of our tilapia fish, to live up to our zero-waste policy”, they said.

“By-products are an old concept that is often considered waste, but by-products are not waste. They are a valuable resource with multiple dimensions and we are looking to further optimize the value in every sense of the word,” Regal Springs CEO, Alois Hofbauer, said in his presentation.

As he explained, Regal Springs has set a goal of utilizing 100% of the tilapia carcass by 2030. This goal is part of its support for the Blue Food Movement, as defined by the Blue Food Assessment (BFA), the international initiative that brings together more than 100 scientists from more than 25 institutions.

The Zurich, Switzerland-based company, with production centers in Indonesia, Honduras and Mexico, is also working on developing markets for the range and for each specific product, they reported.

Development of artisanal products

In his proud presentation, held on April 23 at Seafood Expo Global 2024, Regal Springs CEO Alois Hofbauer explained that Natural Additions are simply what used to be called by-products.

The company is also developing handcrafted products from tilapia by-products, such as leather belts, backpacks and others.

“Tilapia skins are a good example; several studies have found them to be beneficial as a wound care material, so we are now looking to take advantage of their very important medical value,” Hofbauer recalled. “It’s all part of our overall strategy: ‘Do good by doing good‘.”

Regal Springs points out that tilapia skin can heal wounds in both humans and pets, serves as a sustainable resource and presents a natural and effective alternative for treating burns.

Regal Springs raises premium tilapia in lakes in Indonesia, Honduras and Mexico without the use of chemicals, growth hormones or antibiotics. Its fish is BRC, Best Aquaculture Practices and Aquaculture Stewardship Council certified.

High level of segmentation

For them, their real strength here is the high level of segmentation of all the individual components of the fish carcass, which enables us to provide raw materials for highly specialized applications.

“Pioneering sustainable aquaculture, we see it as our moral duty to bring every part of our sustainably raised fish to good use. With Regal Springs Natural Additions, we ensure that we become an even more innovative partner for the industry in the future – consistently following our ambitious sustainability program,” they assured.

Presence in the major market events of 2024

About their presence in Barcelona’s Fira, where the exhibition was held, they said: “Now that we’ve settled into the new year, we’re laser-focused on achieving our goals for 2024 — from expanding our responsible aquaculture operations to educating people worldwide about the benefits of premium-quality tilapia. To this end, we’re dedicated to keeping our fingers on the pulse of the latest seafood industry trends and innovations to ensure Regal Springs continues meeting the rising demand for healthy, planet-friendly fish products.”

For them, the better way to do this is by attending the most hotly anticipated seafood conventions in the events calendar, where top experts, exhibitors, producers, and suppliers will gather to discuss the challenges and opportunities shaping the industry’s future. “Our team can’t wait to dive headfirst into the first major market events of 2024 — starting with putting our best fins forward at two of the world’s biggest seafood exhibitions this spring,” they assured.
