Farmer Swiss Blue Salmon chooses VAQ as RAS partner

Swiss Blue Salmon (SBS) is therefore planning a “Salmon Grow-out” facility with land-based production of salmon up to 4.5 kilograms that will replace around eight percent of the current imported salmon. The contract has been signed and VAQ has been selected as the RAS designer for the 3,400mt (WR) facility located in Canton Glarus on Lake Walensee, which not only has a picturesque setting – but is also an excellent, pristine source of raw water.

“We are delighted to be awarded the task of RAS designer,” says Sales Director/COO at VAQ, Marius Hægh, and he continues. – “We will bring all our knowledge into the design of this state-of-the-art facility. Years of experience are well complimented by the team that SBS brings to the table. They have a lot of local, Swiss and international experience that is crucial to the success of a project of this type.”

Switzerland imports approximately 98% of fish for consumers. This arrives either by road or by air. It makes a significant contribution to the nation’s overall carbon footprint.

Vision and planning

SBS aims to be a sustainable farmer by adopting state of the art technologies that include artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, cloud solutions, digitalization and automation. This is to be at the forefront of developments in the seafood industry, according to Sune Møller, CTO at SBS.

“We have spent the last six months reviewing our strategy and a clear plan for how we will develop and execute collaboration with our project partners. This also included an assessment of RAS designers internationally. VAQ ended up at the top of the wish list,” says Sune Møller, CTO at SBS, who can also report a good start.

“VAQ was chosen on the basis of strong knowledge and a good track record – with a positive attitude towards our vision. A good chemistry has already been developed with our internal team. We therefore look forward to continuing the good cooperation with VAQ’s excellent professionals within optimal RAS solutions,” he concludes.

For its part, Swiss Blue Salmon was founded by Ruedi Ryf. As a passionate fly fisherman, he spent many hours on the water, thinking how to protect the wild population of Atlantic Salmon and bring the same quality of product to the consumer.

“SBS wants to become a leading seafood company known for it’s high animal welfare level and minimal environmental footprint. We believe that farming fish in land-based RAS systems (Recirculating Aquaculture Systems) is the best way to raise healthy, and sustainable fish of a premium quality,” they say.
