British Council Scholarships for Women in STEM

The British Council has launched a scholarship program in partnership with the University of Stirling aimed at benefiting women from South East Asia. This scholarship is open to women who are pursuing a postgraduate degree within our Institute of Aquaculture and who can demonstrate their need for financial support and who wish to inspire future generations of women to pursue careers in the aquaculture industry.

If you are a citizen of one of the following countries, then we strongly encourage you to apply for a scholarship.

  • Cambodia
  • Indonesia
  • Laos
  • Malaysia
  • Myanmar
  • Philippines
  • Thailand
  • Vietnam 

The scholarship covers the full costs associated with study at the University of Stirling including: Tuition fees, Living costs, Travel costs, Equipment and study costs. Full details below:

  • tuition fees
  • up to 12 months monthly stipend at the rate of £1,116 p/month to cover costs of living, including accommodation
  • IELTS exam fee (for scholars without a valid Test of English)
  • up to 3-month Online pre-sessional English course if required
  • return economy-class travel from home country to UK (this will not reimburse costs of fares for dependants)
  • study-related costs, such as essential travel, materials, equipment, thesis printing etc.
  • visa and insurance / NHS surcharge costs
  • ad hoc costs (heavy baggage allowance, etc.)
  • If the scholar is a mother and widowed, divorced or a single parent, the bursary should also cover a child allowance of at least £465 per month for the first child, if they are accompanied by their child and are living at the same address in the UK.
Eligibility and availability

To be eligible for this scholarship you must:

  • be a woman (cis-gendered or trans) or identify as non-binary
  • be a passport holder and permanent resident of one of the following countries: Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Thailand, Vietnam
  • have applied and received an offer to study one of the following degrees at the University of Stirling by the time you submit your scholarship application and be due to start your degree:
  • have completed an Undergraduate Degree that will allow you to meet the academic requirements of one of the eligible degrees listed above, before you submit your application.
  • have not previously studied at degree or higher level in the UK or recently lived in the UK
  • be able to take up your place on the degree in the academic year from Sept 2021 – 2022
  • meet the English language requirements for the course (IELTS 6.5 with no element less than 6.0; or equivalent; or expect to meet the requirement after undertaking on of the pre-sessional English language courses at The University of Stirling)
  • demonstrate a need for financial support
  • agree to return to your country of citizenship for a minimum of two years after your scholarship award has ended.

You are not eligible for a British Council Scholars for Women in STEM if you:

  • hold dual British citizenship
  • are an employee, a former employee, or relative of an employee of Her Majesty’s Government (including British embassies/high commissions; the Department of Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy; Department of International Trade; the Ministry of Defence; and the Home Office)
  • are an employee, or former employee, or relative of an employee of the British Council Scholarship for Women in STEM – eligible countries
  • are in receipt of financial support or funding towards your studies in the UK from any other source
  • have previously studied in the UK with funding from a UK Government-funded scholarship or a UK institutional scholarship/financial bursary.
