The Maritime Affairs and Fisheries Ministry has said aquaculture is expected to supply 8.76 million tons of fish to the domestic market in 2019, or 60 percent of the country’s fish consumption.

By The Jakarta Post

The ministry’s aquaculture Director General Slamet Soebjakto said fish consumption per capita in Indonesia was projected to reach 50 kilograms annually in 2019, meaning fish consumption would reach 14.6 million tons per year.

“I think in the moment of World Food Day, the aquaculture sector should be able to provide an alternative solution to fulfill food demand in a sustainable way,” said Slamet when attending the commemoration of World Food Day in Palu, Central Sulawesi, on Tuesday as quoted in a press statement.

He said at the global level, aquaculture was expected to provide a significant contribution to supplying food demand because fish consumption was expected to increase significantly.

Citing Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) data, Slamet said the world’s fish consumption per capita would increase to 19.6 kg annually in 2021 and 22.5 kg annually in 2030.

The FAO also expected that aquaculture will contribute 172 million tons of fish annually in 2030, or 58 percent of fish demand, Slamet said.

“Therefore, it is time for us to apply technology-based aquaculture, which is based on climate change mitigation so that we can boost our aquaculture production, while we can control its impact on climate change,” he added. (bbn)
