The Salmon Preservation Association for the Waters of Newfoundland is encouraging the provincial goverment to adopt and enforce Norway’s Aquaculture regulations.
SPAWN President John McCarthy was responding to Grieg’s proposal for an open pen salmon aquaculture development in Placentia Bay.
He says while he doesn’t argue that the Grieg proposal will have social and economic benefits for the region, he believes the real reason behind the development is because of strict regulatory requirements in Norway.
McCarthy says open pen aquaculture is simply too risky, and our regulations are not stringent enough.
He says there are jurisdictions that are actually getting rid of open pen aquaculture, and in Washington State where there was a recent escape, the local government voted to ban open pen aquaculture.
