The laboratory of Microbiology and Molecular Biology of the interdisciplinary centre of marine sciences of the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN Cicimar) carries out research on microbial ecology, marine microbiology, control of pathogenic bacteria and development of probiotics, with use in the aquaculture industry primarily.

Generation, strengthening and implementation of biotechnology knowledge, as well as training of human resources for the benefit of society, are some of the aims pursued.

"In the laboratory of Microbiology and Molecular Biology operate lines of research related to microbial ecology, marine natural products, aspects of biological control, where they very significantly bacteriophages - viruses that infect only bacteria - for control of microbial systems natural populations and aquaculture farming, as in the case of shrimp, and development of probiotics for use also in shrimp aquaculture essentially" said the head of the laboratory and Professor and researcher at the institution, the Dr. Bárbara González Acosta.

Stands out the development of probiotics, in collaboration with companies of aquaculture, to combat pathogens of high risk in the crop of shrimp. In other companies in the food sector, to enrich form nutritional energy bars and sweet type plastic probiotics; Likewise, in the production of single cell protein from the production of vinasse obtained during the process of elaboration of the tequila, among other biotechnological developments.

"We interact with entrepreneurs who come to the IPN Cicimar in search of a solution to a specific problem, mainly with aquaculture producers in the camaronicola sector," said Dr. César Salvador Cardona Felix, candidate for the national system of researchers (SNI) and member of the chairs program of the National Council of science and technology (Conacyt), which is currently a stay in the laboratory.

"However, we have projects important with other businessmen from Jalisco for the biotransformation of agro-industrial waste, for example, in productions of food and sweets, we use some of the waste to produce food for cattle. "Using also waste Tequila, at the end of the process of the production of tequila are obtained leachate that they are highly toxic and are thrown away to water bodies or to the ground, tests have been made so that these wastes can be used as effective means for the production of some bacteria that serve as probiotics to mix with the food of livestock" , Félix Cardona continued.

Training of scientists

The laboratory of Microbiology and Molecular Biology from Cicimar is integrated by five highly specialized doctors who contribute in the formation of young scientists who are studying the degrees of Bachelor, master and doctorate in educational institutions and research of the entity.

"For us as researchers within the Cicimar, is very important the formation of human resources, in that sense, in the last four years, we have had the opportunity to integrate students of all levels: undergraduate, master's and PhD, Dolphin Programme, the Mexican Academy of Sciences, among others." They also enrich us because we have a young approach to science; also in graduate programs, we are well trained for academic and industry professionals, in that sense, the laboratory has interacted in an appropriate way,"said Cardona Felix.

The laboratory has received funding from the call of research basic SEP-Conacyt, of the program of incentives to innovation (Analyst), the sectoral Fund for innovation (Finnova) and projects of scientific development to address national problems 2014, which have strengthened its research lines through the acquisition of cutting-edge equipment and specific biotechnology innovation projects.

"We have as goals to develop basic research and try to maintain a close relationship with companies in different sectors, because it is very important from the point of view of human resources training and acquisition of equipment, through financing of innovation and strengthening of infrastructure programmes, since we have benefited from a very broad way and we are working to resolve specific issues raised by the companies. We also believe in the technological development with practical application and continue training HR masters and PhD, as well as bachelor's degree,"concluded Dr. González Acosta.
